Since the Foundation was established, ecology has held an important position among the Projects of the Foundation. In this area the Foundation develops its own activities or supports projects of other organizations. The environmental projects are aimed at improving quality of the environment and at promoting respectful behaviour towards nature, individual animals and plants.
Let´s Return To Nature What is Nature´s
In order to contribute to the improvement of our environment, the Veolia Foundation established years ago cooperation with the Czech Fishing Union (ČRS) and supported its projects focused on returning eels and salmon to our rivers. Currently we also collaborate with the world-famous fishing expert Jakub Vágner. We are a partner of the project Freshwater Giants and in that way we contribute to the rescue of the largest freshwater fish in the world.
Until recently, the Atlantic salmon has been considered extinct in the Czech Republic. Intensive human interventions into the environment made it impossible for the salmon to carry out its natural life cycle, and the salmon consequently disappeared from Czech rivers. This was mainly due to the construction of numerous dams, which the salmon weren´t able to overcome in their seasonal migrations to the spawning grounds, and to the pollution of rivers.
Veolia Voda operates in the Czech Republic over 400 wastewater treatment plants that contribute to the improvement of water quality in our rivers. Under the slogan “Let´s Return To Nature What is Nature´s”, Veolia Foundation would like to return the fish that had lived here before to our rivers.
Support of biodiversity increase in Veolia Voda facilities
In order to increase biodiversity in selected regions we monitor in cooperation with the Czech Union for Nature Conservation following parameters:
On this basis the Czech Union for Nature Conservation proposes activities designed to enhance biodiversity, such as supplementing the area of Veolia Voda with various artificial cavities (boxes for birds, bats and bumblebees, houses for insects...), building watering places, feeders, and planting woody plants and plants for butterflies etc.
Clean Up the World! is an international campaign. Within this campaign groups of volunteers are being organized all over the world and they clean illegal dumps, paths, parks, forests, rivers etc. The campaign Clean Up the World! has taken place in the Czech Republic since 1993 in two terms (spring and fall) and every year thousands of volunteers take part in it. The Foundation supports the Czech Union for Nature Conservation, who is the coordinator of this campaign in the Czech Republic.
The project aims to raise public awareness about the responsibility for the state of the environment, to involve as many children, young people, adults and interest groups as possible, and in practice to carry out the maximum number of campaigns and to clear from waste as many streams, rivers and their surroundings as possible. Finally, it aims to inform general public about the campaign through media.

Volunteerism has been a heart issue of our Foundation for a long time. That is also why we helped to reconstruct the biggest Czech volunteerism web site.

Thanks to the volunteer effort of installer from Středočeské vodárny and member of the Embellishment Association Mšeno, the historical natural spring, used by inhabitants of Mšeno already 200 years ago, was successfully reconstructed.
With the support of our Foundation, the preservation of bees in nature is successful in several regions of the Czech Republic. Bees ensure pollination that is essential for a huge number of living organisms on our planet.
